To vent their spleen at the defeat of Pakistan by arch-rival India in the T20 Cricket World Cup fixture in Kolkata, cricket fans in Islamabad smashed old television sets, took out funeral processions for the national cricket, and burned the effigies of cricketers on Saturday night.
In the eagerly-awaited fixture, Pakistan batted first to score the scanty 119 runs in 18 allotted overs.
India easily chased out the target in 15.5 overs to the exasperation of Pakistani cricket enthusiasts.
Having finished their respective work early or put it off to watch the match, the cricket-crazy fans were let down by the poor performance of the country’s team against India’s in Kolkata.
Fuming they left the places saying for them, winning the match against India was equal to the country’s team winning the World Cup and losing the fixture so miserably was simply unacceptable.
So frustrated were some that they gathered old television sets and destroyed them by batons and bricks to voice their disappointment.
Such incidents were reported in Aabpara and G-8 Markaz. Besides, few youths marching through the streets in I-10/1 held a mock funeral for cricket in the country by shouldering a cot with a cricket bat and ball on it.
They later torched the effigies of cricketers, especially captain Shahid Afridi’s. The protesters said if the team didn’t plan and execute things well, its dream of winning the contest would never fulfil.
